How to get promoted this year

Ever feel like you’re always the person passed over when there is a promotional opportunity in the office? Do you constantly go to work wishing you could get more out of your job – you just can’t seem to make it happen?

Well you’re not alone. Millions of hard working men and women want more for their careers – but just can’t seem to grab a hold of it.

Here are some tips to help you stand out and get ahead this year.

Volunteer to Clean Up the Mess

We’ve all been on project teams where shit was rolling down hill faster than we could run. But, if you are looking for a promotion in the near term, volunteer to take charge of that failing project and turn it from trash to treasure.

It will likely take some real effort, but if you can prove to management that you can clean up even the messiest of messes, they will likely have your name high on the list of leaders to look to first when the next promotional opportunity opens up.

Don’t Gossip

I get it – work can be a real drag sometimes. You have to work with people you might not like and deal with decisions you might not agree with.

If you want to get ahead you need to turn your classy engine into high gear and rise above the nonsense. Because you’re not going to get promoted if you’re known to all as the water cooler trash talker.

Don’t gossip about your peers, those above you or those below you. Contribute in a meaningful way to help the organization grow and be sure that your entire team knows they can count on you if and when they need you.

Don’t Complain You Deserve a Promotion

There is nothing worse than having to listen to Sally Jones complain every day that SHE should have been given that last promotion.

Don’t get me wrong – I know it stings when you think you’re THE ONE and then you find out someone else beat you to it. But everything happens for a reason.

Don’t be angry or upset if you didn’t get that prized role you were hoping for. Just take faith in knowing a better opportunity is just around the corner. It will happen for you when the time is right – so keep your chin up and keep going.

Get Out There

There is a reason people move on from companies. So if you just don’t think that opportunity is ripe for you with your current employer, then continue to give it your best while expanding your network and looking elsewhere.

Brush up your resume, join some groups on LinkedIn and spread your wings a bit. You’d be surprised what windows will open for you when you least expect it.

What do you think about the above tactics? What other techniques have you used to get promoted? I’d love to hear them!
